so I'm thinking of hacking together a pocket-sized trpg for Final Fantasy
By which I mean the original one -- you know, Final Fantasy ;3~ I'll be using The Black Hack, which is one of the simplest iterations on the D&D/d20 chassis out there, and it's pretty much a case of "I wonder if I can do this thing". I don't have any further plans for it really, lol.
The magical question is ...
Which version of Final Fantasy?
So I thought I'd ask opinions :D First, a handy poll:
And also, if there's any particular bits or snips you might think one would want to put in a weird little project like this (say, do I include things that are in FF illos but never made it in actual pixels til later games, like behemoths), or wouldn't want, or whatever else, lay it on me here X3~

So yeah, I'm pretty much doing the same thing in reverse lol.

I think I'd have to reserve judgement on playing/running a game online until I know wee things like whether I actually finish (or start!) the thing. It's better not to make promises I don't know if I can keep ;3
It's also worth noting that The Black Hack, and especially 1e TBH which is what I'm using, is very minimal compared to, say, actual 5e D&D and the like; it'd probably go smoothly enough online, but it doesn't bring the crunch a lot of folks like to the table.

Anyway, yeah. Remake in one form or another. It's okay to play the most fun version.

And where does "the most fun version" come into play here? What makes you automatically assume I would consider any given remake of any given FF more "fun" than the original?

As for assumptions, I was offering my opinion somewhat playfully, not making an assumption about yours. But I can see why that might be annoying. I'm sorry. I will not intrude further.

- Both have spells-per-day, so you'd just have to turn clerics into white mages
- The original NES Final Fantasy had a more lost technology vibe (Floating Castle was an orbital base instead of a castle in the sky) that I like more than its remakes
Is there some particular difference you were thinking of between the NES/Dawn of Souls/PSP versions that would be reflected in the tabletop rules?no subject
The various English-language releases use different translations for very nearly everything, which is something that I need to take into account and there can be very noted preferences on. Similarly, some of them have extra locations/equipment/additions to the monster lists which would be extra factors to consider (and work to be done).
The intersection of these two points is why there's a "combo" option on the poll besides; it's an interesting thing to contemplate if nothing else --

Have you done much work on this since you made the original post?
This post kind of makes me want to run a FF1-inspired TTRPG. Almost no one I know has played it, the plot has a good arc, and there's plenty of areas to expand on with sidquests. I ran one video-game-inspired TTRPG once before (with Fallout) and that worked out pretty well.

I've put some thought into some small rules tweaks, and was staring down FF-to-TBL detail ratios for a few of the job classes, but aside from that it's been mental pushing around of pieces and not setting anything concrete down.

There's a ton of Hack expansions/supplements on DriveThru and elsewhere that people added but I'm just doing my own; it's more time-consuming than anything else, really.
