so I'm thinking of hacking together a pocket-sized trpg for Final Fantasy

By which I mean the original one -- you know, Final Fantasy ;3~ I'll be using The Black Hack, which is one of the simplest iterations on the D&D/d20 chassis out there, and it's pretty much a case of "I wonder if I can do this thing". I don't have any further plans for it really, lol.

The magical question is ...

Which version of Final Fantasy?

So I thought I'd ask opinions :D First, a handy poll:

And also, if there's any particular bits or snips you might think one would want to put in a weird little project like this (say, do I include things that are in FF illos but never made it in actual pixels til later games, like behemoths), or wouldn't want, or whatever else, lay it on me here X3~

So basically you're turning a video game that's basically D&D back into D&D?

Legit~

So is this a thing we'll be able to play online with each other or is it more of like, just kinda seeing if you can do it? Because dude, no lie, I would be 100% down with playing FF DnD with y'all, just sayin'. :3

I can't remember which version got ported to iOS, but it's the one which establishes Luneth, Arc, Refia and Ingus, whereas ... gosh, it's been a while... I believe the original didn't sketch out the Four Warriors of Light and/or just called them Onion Knights?

Anyway, yeah. Remake in one form or another. It's okay to play the most fun version.

Sorry, my old eyes struggle with this website.. I didn't see the colon in "Final Fantasy ;3".

As for assumptions, I was offering my opinion somewhat playfully, not making an assumption about yours. But I can see why that might be annoying. I'm sorry. I will not intrude further.

A bit late commenting here, but I voted NES because:
  • Both have spells-per-day, so you'd just have to turn clerics into white mages
  • The original NES Final Fantasy had a more lost technology vibe (Floating Castle was an orbital base instead of a castle in the sky) that I like more than its remakes
Is there some particular difference you were thinking of between the NES/Dawn of Souls/PSP versions that would be reflected in the tabletop rules?

I didn't realize that I preferred NUKE to Flare before you mentioned it, and now that I think about it I have a very strong preference for the former. Emoji Smiling sweatdrop

Have you done much work on this since you made the original post?

This post kind of makes me want to run a FF1-inspired TTRPG. Almost no one I know has played it, the plot has a good arc, and there's plenty of areas to expand on with sidquests. I ran one video-game-inspired TTRPG once before (with Fallout) and that worked out pretty well.

Does TBH have an easy equivalent to the monk or the red mage? I checked the SRD real quick and there's nothing there, but I don't know what the homebrew scene is like around it.
