Fairly easily, I'd imagine. Crisis Core had materia that worked similar-to-but-differently-than the original, just for one example, and it was a pretty streamlined system -- and I for one wouldn't mind some of clunkiness removed from the system in the base game.
Since VIII's getting more of an upscale (a "remaster") than a remake, I'm not really expecting the systems themselves to change much if at all?
Slightly misleading headline there, I thought for a moment that it was claiming materia would be removed altogether. I can see that some materia wouldn't work though (e.g. Cover?) and it'll be cool to see what new materia is added.
